Zoom in

2008/09/20

I thought every Mac user knew about this, but I have found quite a few that did not, so I'm mentioning it here "just in case". It's "zooming" and I believe it is enabled by default (if not, you'll find it is System Preferences, Keyboard and Mouse, Trackpad (assuming you have a trackpad). It also works with a scroll wheel mouse and if for some reason you have neither, it's available as hot-keys in Universal Access, Seeing, Zoom (that's NOT on by default).

With a Trackpad, you hold Ctrl and then with two fingers on the pad, you can zoom in or out. With a scroll wheel mouse, just hold Ctrl and use the scroll wheel. With Universal Access turned on, the default is Cmd-Opt-Hyphen (-) and Cmd-Opt-Equal (=).

This can make all the difference in the world if you are trying to show something to a room full of people with or without a projection device. These camera shots show the difference:

No Zoom

no zooming

Some Zoom

some zooming

More Zoom

more zooming

That last is not as far as it goes, though images do start getting very pixelated after that.
